Rudolph M Schindler Austrian / American, 1887-1953

Rudolf M. Schindler was born in Vienna in 1887. He studied at the Imperial Technical Institute from 1906 to 1911, and moved to Chicago where he worked for renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright. In 1921, Schindler established his own practice in Hollywood, California, where he collaborated with Richard Neutra from 1925. Although he worked and trained with some of its foremost practitioners, he often is associated with the fringes of the modern movement in architecture. His inventive use of complex three-dimensional forms, warm materials, and striking colors, as well as his ability to work successfully within tight budgets has placed him as a maverick of early twentieth century architecture. Some of his seminal projects include the King's Road House in West Hollywood, California (1921-22) and the P. Lovell House in Newport Beach, California (1926).
